2022/1/20
On January 18, 2022, sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the top ten scientific and technological progress news in China and the world in 2021 voted by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering was announced in Beijing. China University of Science and Technology Guo Guangcan team's "Rare earth ions to achieve multi-mode quantum relay and 1-hour optical storage" was selected as "China's Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress News" in 2021.

The research group of Li Chuanfeng and Zhou Zongquan from the team of Academician Guo Guangcan has long been engaged in the research of solid-state quantum memory based on rare earth ion doped crystals. In 2021, the research group implemented a new quantum relay architecture, namely multi-mode quantum relay based on absorption-type storage; The storage time of coherent light is increased to 1 hour, greatly refreshing the previous world record (1 minute), and confirming the feasibility of the principle of optical quantum U disk. These results provide a new solution based on rare earth ions for the realization of remote quantum communication, and the resulting papers include one in Nature (cover story) and one in Nature Communications.
The news of China's ten major scientific and technological developments has been strongly echoed in the society, enabling the public to further understand the dynamics of scientific and technological development at home and abroad, and playing a positive role in the popularization of science and technology.
